I don’t think men’s and women’s biological imperatives actually are at cross purposes. Of course, a woman has more biologically at stake, with the potential costs/risks of bearing and raising children. But a good book on the topic is Sex at Dawn, which argues humans are not naturally monogamous, and in a matriarchal culture, all men and women more co-operatively raise their community’s children.
