I think becoming exceptionally successful often entails some degree of narcissism, as the individual must isolate and work profusely, for his/her professional advancement but often to the detriment of his/her social skills. So the person develops a narcissistic personality as a/he tries to compensate for social deficits and prove him/herself and the importance of his/her successes. I hope we are moving away from this model of success slowly but surely.
