I think your concerns are valid, and it’s very disturbing that at the moment, several social media companies have disbanded their ethics board (including, for instance, Meta; see https://www.startupdaily.net/topic/social-media/not-responsible-meta-kills-off-its-team-overseeing-ethical-ai/ ). I do hope there will be more regulation and these digital companies and platforms will continue to be held more accountable. As a mom and long-time educator, I am definitely highly concerned as to how social media is negatively impacting our lives.
