The pharmaceutical industry has always been profit-motivated; it’s part of why psychedelics and cannabis had been stigmatized and criminalized for so long. Unfortunately in a capitalist system, all our systems are subject to corruption. I do believe there’s a place for for-profit psychedelic treatments, but decriminalization is also important. Natural psychedelics like mushrooms and ayahuasca (and ibogaine for opiates) tend to be more effective long-term for helping people to learn how to heal themselves and change their mindsets. There is promise in synthetic psychedelic treatments too, but studies show treatment from ketamine tends to not last as long as treatment with high-dose psilocybin. I think the medical model will continue to exist for some time, but growing alongside it are underground and so-called alternative and complementary medicine practices that will continue to flourish. I believe ultimately we as individuals are our own best healers, and it is on us to take accountability for our health and look at it holistically and with a trauma-informed lens. Doctors do their best to help, but the Western medical model tends to treat symptoms rather than causes and vastly mitigate the importance of nutrition and a healthy lifestyle. I hope we continue to see psychedelics disrupt medical and other systems and help humanity (help ourselves) with our psychological and physical ills. Also, it’s worth noting that while I am sure there is profit to be had in the psychedelic gold rush, people who need access to these medicines and treatments can and do have affordable ways to find healing; this is another reason why we also need alternative healing models outside of the medical system (affordability and accessibility).
