Unfortunately, a huge part of the problem is that birth is so medicalized in the US, where our medical system relies on a disease model of health. So pregnancy and labor/pain is seen as pathological, and women are put on the clock and scheduled to have C-sections if their labor doesn’t progress within a certain timeframe. Ricki Lake did a great documentary on the business of birthing in the US.
