There is no questioning it. The 4/20 high that we associate with cannabis plants is inexorably linked to the female plants, which are more prized than the male plants for their buds and their high THC content.

As per writers Magrabi and Jassey via leafwell.com, “Female cannabis plants are the most sought-after plants for most cannabis cultivators. They contain the prized bud that comprises all cannabis products, whether smokable, topical, or otherwise. Female cannabis plants also contain the lion’s share of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the primary psychoactive compound in cannabis. Male plants, in contrast, contain only trace amounts of THC” (2023).

Given that hemp is legal on a federal level and that we now can also obtain hemp-derived THC (and delta-THC), the psychoactive cannabinoid and its analogs can be derived from male plants too. Yet, it says a lot about the nature of the plant that it is the female sex of the cannabis plant that is particularly prized for its buds.

As per leafly.com, “Females are the prizes of cannabis plants — they are the ones that grow the buds that we all know and love. Anytime you see a picture…
